Klymit insulated hammock v review: Is this Sleeping Pad Worth It?

()

My personal opinion is that the Klymit insulated hammock v is pretty good outdoor equipment in general, and particularly an extremely comfortable sleeping pad.

The Hammock V offers camping enthusiasts an ideal balance of premium materials and artistry, and a feature that is desirable at an affordable price for high-end equipment. Explore it by Swinging Camping.

Introduction: What Makes the Klymit Insulated Hammock V Sleeping Pad Different?

What can work on the ground may not always work in the hammock. Unfortunately, Klymit’s effort at making a hammock pad demonstrates this. The Klymit Insulated Hammock V Sleeping Pad is a comfortable pad that could appeal to people who hang their hammocks in front-country areas in warm to mild weather.

However, an overstated R-value is a major conclusion from the nine nights of testing in March and April.

Klymit insulated hammock v

There are a variety of options in Klymit insulated hammock v. Most popular choices are under quilts or a regular pad inside the hammock, or between the outer and inner layers of a double-layer hammock.

Klymit Insulated Hammock V Review: Quick Overview After Real Testing

As of now, I’ve had my best personal experience with the Klymit Insulated Hammock V Sleeping Pad Static, a rectangular pad with a high R-value designed specifically for ground use. My family has a few insulated pads that are currently being used, and they’ve been fantastic to date.

However, when Klymit launched a new, specially shaped, large hammock, my curiosity was piqued, but the initial hammock pad’s low R-value was a niggle for me. When they later introduced this Klymit insulated hammock V model, I became interested again, even though the suggested retail price was a bit high for a rather unusual product, considering that you can find high-quality synthetic (and, in the present, even lower) underquilts at the same price.

Out of the Box: Weight, Stuff Sack, and First Impressions

Klymit insulated hammock v arrived in its own 5” x 10” stuff bag, which the factory folded into a neat, elegant package. The dimensions and directions are printed onto the bag. Inside is an incredibly small pocket that houses a repair kit and a patch.

Before unpacking it, I weighed my Klymit Hammock V Insulated on the postal scale at work. The weight came out to 2lbs. 4.2oz. It is 4.2oz more than the stated weight (32oz), which is easily the largest pad I’ve used. Although weight is an argument against backpacking using this pad, I walked fairly light and managed to carry a minimum weight of 25lbs.

Klymit insulated hammock v

In the stuff bags, the Klymit Insulated Static V Hammock measures 47” x 78”. It’s more than sufficient padding to fit my 774” frame.

In the hammock, it was clear that the Klymit insulated hammock v lived up to its marketing claims, allowing your hammock to spread for a more comfortable, relaxing lie. It was convenient to get in and out of the hammock to grab whatever gear I needed as I got ready for the evening.

Although the Klymit Insulated Klymaloft lies straight in the hammock, I did not have any issues sleeping at an angle, unlike the hammock hangers who lie flat. prefer.

Klymit Hammock V Insulated Design, Comfort, and Durability

The design of Hammock V is similar in numerous ways to a traditional sleeping pad, but with some important variations. There are two variations of the Klymit Insulated Hammock V-Pad. The non-insulated mat weighs 774g with an R-value of 1.6. The non-insulated pad is approximately 10cm shorter than the insulated pad and has the exact thickness of 7.6cm.

I have the insulated version to test. It weighs 907g, which is a little heavier, but it has an R-value of 4.4, which is a lot warmer. It’s also larger than the non-insulated version, with 198cm. The thickness is similar to that of a match, at 7.5 cm.

The version that is insulated has a lined substance called “Klymalite,” which is “Lightweight, resilient, compressible, and pliable according to Klymit’s marketing. This means it’s lightweight, compact, and will continue to do its job even after heavy use.

Sleeping Pad With Wings for Hammock Campers

Klymit insulated hammock v

Freeze-outs at night discourage some from spending the entire night camping in hammocks. Therefore, Klymit made a hammock-specific, heated sleeping pad.

Hammocks have been gaining popularity for Camping, but overnight “freeze-outs” discourage people from staying the entire night under the trees. Therefore, Klymit decided to create a Klymit Hammock V Insulated Sleeping Pad.

“My hips and shoulders got cold.” I mostly listen to hammock campers who utilize sleeping pads for insulation. This is likely the most common case. Kylmit has joined the hammock market to eliminate cold spots.

Klymit insulated hammock v sleeping pad features flaps that fold out to provide extra protection (read: warmth) around your shoulders and hips, helping prevent cold spots. After numerous tests, I can confirm that it is effective.

Functionality and Ease of Use of the Klymit Hammock V Insulated Sleeping Pad

The basic principles of Hammock V are the same as the other pads I’ve ever used: it has an inflator valve and a deflator valve, and that’s it. It’s not a standout feature in the general operation of this mat, and I’ve seen the same across all the mats I’ve owned and used.

Through my experience, I’ve noticed it holds air well with no issues. One thing I’ve noticed is that it’s an absolute beast: the pads aren’t too loud when moving with them, unlike other pads I’ve tried. It’s a great thing if you’re a light sleeper.

In terms of the inflation, the pad inflated within 20-25 breaths when I used my mouth, so it wasn’t overly difficult to complete. Inflate valves are all-in-one valves; if you are exhausted and need to stop inflating, take a breather and relax. The valve will shut off all the hard work from exiting the pad.

Personally, I prefer using an inflatable pump to inflate pads and keep moisture out. I’d be interested in trying Klymit’s quick air pump. It is always my preferred method for inflating pads, but it wasn’t available, so the lung had to take over.

Inflation, Deflation, and Valve Performance

Klymit insulated hammock v

Deflation and inflation occur through two valves situated at the uppermost part of the pad. These values can be clearly identified. The values were firmly snapped into place and held while I laid them down on my pad.

When looking inside the value of Inflate (below), in the interior of the pad (below), one can see the area made of rubberized material, which makes sure that the air doesn’t escape when the pad is inflated. I was apprehensive about the possibility that the air wouldn’t go out during breaths. However, the valve functioned extremely well each time.

Klymit says the Klymit insulated hammock v can be inflated in just 15 breaths. I discovered that 20-25 breaths were more real. The lower channel, particularly that “wings,” and the lower “wings,” were not filled with just 20 large breaths.

A funny error on my part: Make sure the deflating valve is closed before starting. I lasted 30 minutes an evening before I realized my error!

Testing in Real Camping Conditions

The Klymit Insulated Hammock V Sleeping Pad was tested over 9 nights between March and April of 2017. Three nights of testing were conducted while car camping. Six nights were spent backpacking along the Ozark Trail in Missouri.

The overnight temperatures varied from the upper 50’s to the low 30’s. This pad has been tested with the Therma-Rest HD Quilt that I previously reviewed.

When buying the Klymit Insulated Hammock V, check what comes in the package:

  • The hammock itself
  • Integrated insulation (usually an inflatable or sewn-in layer)
  • Suspension straps or ridgeline
  • Stuff sack or storage bag
  • Inflation accessories (if air insulation)

👉 Some models come with straps and accessories, while others require you to buy them separately. Be sure to read the product specs!

Durability tells you how well the hammock holds up over time and in different conditions:

  • Material Quality: Look for ripstop nylon or reinforced fabric — these resist tears and abrasions.
  • Stitching Strength: Strong stitching at load points makes a big difference for long-term use.
  • Insulation Longevity: The insulated layer should maintain warmth and resist compression over many uses.
  • Weather Resistance: A durable hammock should handle moisture, wind, and variable temperatures without degrading quickly.

Warranties tell you how confident the manufacturer is in their product:

  • Klymit usually offers a limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
  • Duration can vary, so check whether it’s 1 year, 3 years, or a lifetime warranty.
  • Understand what the warranty covers — does it include fabric wear, broken hardware, or only manufacturing defects?

Think about how and where you plan to use the hammock:

🏕️ Camping

  • Good for three-season camping (spring, summer, fall)
  • The insulation helps keep you warm on cool nights

🚴‍♂️ Backpacking / Hiking

  • Lightweight design makes it ideal for carrying in a pack
  • Compact when packed down

🌲 Everyday Outdoor Use

  • Great for backyard, park, or beach relaxation
  • Insulation adds comfort in breezy conditions

Here are some more useful reviews

Comfort Performance for Side Sleepers and Back Sleepers

  • The Hammock V is comfortable. While in the hammock and on the ground, the pad felt comfortable.
  • Hammock V is easy to access and exit from. I usually get up at least once a night to go to the bathroom, look up at the sky, or read a book, etc. It was never a hassle to get back in.
  • The Hammock V stays in place as described. One of the main disadvantages of using pads is that they can slide off you when you get into the hammock. Thanks to the Hammock V’s “Non-slip Zones,” it never moved from the spot I placed it.
  • It’s like the Hammock V wraps around you. It wasn’t stifling or uncomfortable. Its “wings” did their job of covering my hips and shoulders, which are known for being cold areas and require a pads extender.

Warmth and R-Value: Is the Klymit Insulated Hammock V Really Warm Enough?

When I set out to hike the Ozark Trail, I was sure that, even if the temperatures dropped below forecast, I could use a pad to keep warm. I’ve used cheap closed-foam cell pads that have been used up to the 20’s several times.

They are much less prone to R-values and have worked well for me. The 20-year-old Therma-Rest camprest air mattress has me much lower. Therefore, even if Klymit exaggerated, I was sure I’d be warm.

Performance Around 50degF

I discovered that when temperatures fell into the low 50s, it was impossible to lie on my side any longer. The strain on my shoulder and hip was just too much to handle the heat.

Therefore, lying back keeps your back from contacting the uninsulated sections; however, shifting to your side instantly shifts the baffles and compresses the pad, leaving the hip and shoulder no longer heated.

Performance in the Mid-40s

It’s not advisable to move around much when temperatures fall into the mid-40s.

If you visit Klymit’s website, there’s an inviting model tucked into an entire sleeping bag. Hammock hangers aren’t able to have the luxury of sleeping in a bag full of. It’s hard to move in and out of the bag, and your body weight will reduce the R-value underneath you. Hangers sleep on top of quilts or in an open bag. But hanging the Klymit insulated hammock V does not work in this hanging design.

Why the Klymit Insulated Hammock V Pad Struggles in the Low 30s

Klymit insulated hammock v

It is unlikely that you will want to bring this pad into the 30s!

The forecast called for our coldest night, with temperatures dropping to 42 degrees. Then, that night, we awoke to the tarps covered in frost. The night was cold and miserable, and my back felt like I was lying on unfinished concrete.

READ Useful  Trek Light Hammock Review: 7 Reasons It’s Worth Every Penny

Since these “wings” prevent the pad from fitting inside a quilt, the air chambers start to adapt to the outside temperature as your body heats the chambers below you, and the remainder of the cushion absorbs this warmth away from you.

Hammock Sleeping Pad vs Underquilt: Which Option Is Better?

Many hammock campers in the core utilize an underquilt. As with everything, it boils down to cost, weight/packability, and your personal preferences. I’ve tried both and am satisfied with them.

The obvious advantage is that the pad can also perform on the ground. I’m afraid to put my underquilt in the bag and go on a spot only to discover it untreedy!

Klymit Insulated Static V Peak

It is an additional option worth considering when looking at Klymit camping pads. Unlike the Insulated Klymit Hammock V, this pad is designed for sleeping on the ground rather than hammock camping. It is better suited to campers who typically stay in tents, shelters, or on flat ground.

For hammock campers, the most pressing issue is that a standard rectangular pad may not adequately protect the hips and shoulders in the hammock. This is why you’ll find that the Klymit insulated hammock v tries to stand out by its larger size and lateral wings. But if your camping style is more ground-based activities than hammock use, the Static V Peak might be more useful.

Klymit Insulated Static V Lite

This is helpful to review in the Klymit Insulated Hammock v review, since it focuses on lightweight Camping. For backpackers who value pack weight, a lighter pad could be more appealing than the heavier Hammock V.

But the Static Light isn’t specifically designed for hammocks. It can be used in certain hammocks, specifically double-layer hammocks; it doesn’t offer the identical wraparound shoulder or hip coverage as the Klymit Insulated Hammock V Sleeping Pad.

In Conclusion

If your hammock hangs in warm weather and weight isn’t problematic, this is worth a look. I enjoyed taking this out on a hot afternoon and relaxing on the trail. I was happy with its performance when temperatures were above 50 degrees.

But the overstated R-Value, and the cost relative to it. The return of warmth was an important disadvantage. I might use it for Camping in the car, but it will not be part of my hiking trip again.

FAQ About

The Klymit Insulated Hammock V is made for hammock camping. It adds comfort and insulation inside a hammock, helping reduce cold spots and pressure points while you sleep outdoors.

Yes, it is designed with insulation to help keep you warmer than a regular non-insulated sleeping pad. It works best in cool to mild cold conditions, but very low temperatures may still require an underquilt or extra insulation.

Yes, you can use it on the ground, but it is mainly shaped for hammocks. For tent camping, a regular sleeping pad may feel more stable and practical.

Yes, many campers find it comfortable because the V-shaped design supports the body and helps the pad stay in place inside the hammock.
