Introduction
There are more camping hammocks on the market today than at any time in the past… However, certain of these “camping hammocks” aren’t nearly as comfortable as sleeping on a banana peel.
The right hammock for camping is essential for your lasting enjoyment of your camping hammock…
This review of the lawson hammock blue ridge provides all you need to know to decide if this hammock is the right fit for your personal style.
Lawson Hammocks has been a top-quality product for the past 13 years. Since multinational giants dominate the outdoor industry, I am thrilled to highlight an independent company that makes the most amazing product: the Lawson Blue Ride camping hammock.
A Little History and Clarification About Lawson Blue Ridge Hammocks
Maybe a caveat as well as an explicit definition would be appropriate to include at this moment. The term “spreader bar hammock” refers to the New American Style backyard hammock.
In the late 1890s, the riverboat captain Joshua Ward developed this woven rope hammock. The classic style was introduced to Western civilization by Columbus, who was already evolving. Spreader bars were like bridge-style hammocks that created an oblong or barrel-shaped bed, and, to reduce fabric thickness, they deserved a portion of the credit.

- This is a portable camping hammock made for outdoor use.
- It’s designed for backpacking, hiking, car camping, and general outdoor lounging.
- Look at things like weight capacity, material, size, and included accessories (straps, carabiners).
When choosing a camping hammock, check how long it will last:
- Material Quality: The Blue Ridge uses strong, breathable nylon that resists tearing.
- Stitching: Reinforced seams matter — better stitching means longer lifespan.
- Weight Limit: Make sure the hammock supports your weight plus gear (often 400–500 lb range).
- Weather Resistance: Nylon should dry fast and resist mildew, but check if it can stand rain, UV exposure, and abrasion from trees/rocks.
- Manufacturer Support: Check whether Lawson offers a warranty for defects or material failure.
- Warranty Length: Look for at least 1 year coverage — some brands offer longer.
- What It Covers: Warranty should include faulty materials, broken hardware, and stitching issues.
- Proof of Purchase: Keep your receipt in case you need a replacement.
Think about how you plan to use the hammock:
1. Camping & Backpacking
- Is it lightweight and compact for your pack?
- Does it come with straps that don’t require knots?
2. Car Camping & Leisure
- Comfort is key — generous size and hammock shape matter more than weight.
- Easy setup outdoors or even in your yard.
3. Travel or Beach Use
- Portability and quick setup are priorities.
- Weather resistance is helpful if you’re near water or sand.

Tips and Recommendations
If you’re looking at this Lawson Blue Ridge Camping Hammock, here are some suggestions to help inspire you:
- Make sure the suspension is pitched at 30 degrees before attaching the spreader bar.
- Doze by the side of the bed.
- Get a cushion!
- The foot end should be pitched slightly higher than your head to prevent it from sliding.
- Include guy lines on the corners of the tarp to create a safe storm-weather pitch.
- If you’re worried about tipping the line, use tie-outs for the corners. I suggest using Jack’s “R” Better Self-Tensioning Lines.
- To remove the weight, cut off the spreader bars and the tent poles.
- If you don’t have any bugs, you can remove the tent poles, then lie on the hammock or flip it upside down.
The Spreader Bar: Not the Problem
To clarify, nearly every hammock that is set tight has a higher center of gravity and may be unstable. Spreader bars can contribute to tipping, but aren’t solely responsible for it. In fact, traditional Nicaraguan hammocks generally have spreader bars at the ends and are not slippery.
People have also noticed that adding tiny spreader bars to Brazilian-style hammocks can artificially extend the hammock, alleviate calf-ridge discomfort, and provide a larger bed for the diagonal layout.
The method is to pitch an appropriate hammock, either with or without spreaders, using a suitable sag. It varies with the hammock’s size; yet, if you drop the center point and drive out from the tippy side, the problem can be eliminated. The deep sag allows the user to lie diagonally across the center point, making the lay more rounded.

The Camping Hammock is Different
On the surface, the Lawson Hammock Blue Ridge looks structurally identical to the modern spreading-bar hammock. Yes, the Lawson utilizes spreader bars, yet the parallels terminate there.
The bars of the Lawson are more straightforward; they don’t stretch across the full length of the hammock’s body.
This is a significant distinction due to the way the fabric interacts with the bars, as well as the elasticity of the cloth and its lay.
The fabric at the bottom of the hammock is folded and gathered, creating an area that helps lower your center of gravity.
Furthermore, the Lawson isn’t afflicted by the twitchiness that can be found in contemporary rope hammocks. The thing that sets the fabric in this Lawson, not the bar, is the tent poles used to break open the bug net. Poles can be rotated, which suggests there’s some play in the lay of the hammock.
I pulled my Lawson, revamped it several times, and tested it with different hang angles and other possibilities. What I observed is that when the lawson blue ridge hammock is hanging at the typical 20-30-degree angle along its suspension line, it works like any Brazilian hammock in terms of general design, comfort, and stability.
If it is empty, it appears that the lawson hammock blue ridge can hang at an untight pitch; however, appearances can be deceiving.
Suspension System and Setup
The Lawson Blue Ridge Camping Hammock generally uses rope clews to attach to its anchor points. They are threaded into the spreader bars and later secured to the hammock with metal grommets. After spending some time working on re-engineering hammock clews, I was able to figure out how to tie them and reconstruct the clews.
This model did not include any metal hardware on the clews, just a loop of rope. Although it was serviceable, a rope loop for an attachment point was not my first choice. It can be extracted and returned with a Climbing Ranked carabiner or a weightless aluminum descender ring, both of which allow you to connect additional straps and other suspension systems.
Tarp Features
The tarp is designed to “wrap” around the Lawson Blue Ridge hammock tent. The intersections of the tarp are connected to the hammock’s body via short loops of shock cord, where the tent poles link. There are hook-and-loop patches that allow the tarp to be secured to the hammock. The 2-person lay-flat hammock can be covered so that you don’t need to snag the corners. Nevertheless, it is feasible to guy escape the corners, which is suggested for a tighter pitch.
The tarp’s loops spread around the hammock’s clews, along with some plastic hardware and a shock cord. It isn’t suited to its intended use. I suggest replacing it with a simple hook for mittens rather than the strap clip included with the Best Lay Flat Hammocks. You can tell from the picture that I only utilized one clip to attach the tarp. Any additional hardware is easily removed.
Bug Net Features
One thing I valued about this Lawson hammock blue ridge camping was the spacious interior. This was possible due to the poles used to make tents. At this cost, one would expect fiberglass poles; however, the Lawson Blue Ridge hammock uses high-quality metal tent poles.
The poles for tents split in strange locations (to my eyes), creating several pole pieces; however, they work perfectly. The shock cord that runs through the poles allows them to hold together, making packing and assembly simple.
Its bug netting, along with the Lawson hammock blue ridge, can be accessed via a single zippered entrance on one side. It is crucial to hang out of the Lawson Hammock tent before getting in so that you don’t end up lying on it, putting tension on the seams, or pulling on the door when entering.
Square Design: Comfort Over Banana Shape
One of the things I saw was that this hammock is fitted with two sturdy steel bars at each end, which can fold up when packed. They provide a square form that can be used for your hammock when it is set up, ensuring you don’t get trapped in a tight banana shape in the evening.
I actually discovered that this was the first hammock I could lie on my back in and be at ease.
Stay Warm with underquilts and Pads.
The tarp uses shorter shock cords that attach to the tent’s poles. This is also the place I hung the lawson blue ridge hammock underquilt.
Under quilts are great because they work well with the Lawson Blue Ridge Camping Hammock. With Four-pole attachments, it is easy to join an under-quilt. And since it’s pulled away, there are no air gaps to fret about. To use my quilts as underquilts, I had to pull the edges of the gathered pieces to make the quilts lie flat. I then wrapped my shock cord over the pole connections.
Sleeping pads work well in conjunction with the lawson blue ridge hammock. Since the fabric is flat, it does not get tangled as it does in gathered-end hammocks.
The Hammock That Thinks It’s a Tent
It’s also an excellent hammock; it can be laid on the ground to create a more classic, low, sleek tent or bivouac. This is an excellent option, one you won’t be able to achieve with an ordinary hammock. This gives you more options if there aren’t many trees to choose from, or when you’re trying to fit two people into the shelter, not just two.
Conclusion
The Lawson Blue Ridge Camping Hammock is a lower-priced, all-in-one camping hammock model for ground camping and individual backpacking trips. Due to the additional weight of the spreader bars and tent poles, the hammock isn’t the most delicate option, but it’s a good alternative to tent shelters for single occupants.
This is more than an ordinary camp hammock. The well-thought-out hammock can be set up in a matter of minutes and arrives with rain fly tarps for poor weather. It is also possible to set this on the ground for an impromptu bivvy shelter since its base is water-resistant.
With just a few tweaks, I reduced the weight to less than 4lbs, which meant I could leave my tarp mesh shelter and my sleeping pad at home and actually trim weight from my backpack.

FAQ About
Easy, Lightweight Set-up
90"x42". Weight capacity 275 lbs. Packed weight is approx. 4.25lbs (including poles, rainfly, and stuff sack).
Sleeping in a hammock every night isn't inherently bad, but doing so without the proper setup or technique can lead to long-term back and neck pain. Because hammocks are common worldwide, their daily use requires specific considerations.
Hammocks can be great for your back when used correctly. Because they eliminate pressure points and distribute weight evenly, they provide excellent relief for back and joint pain. However, an improperly hung hammock forces your spine into a curved, "banana" shape, which can cause significant back pain over time.
Cotton rope hammocks are considered more comfortable than polyester rope hammocks, but cotton will not last as long as polyester. Cotton as a material is subject to mildew and will deteriorate if left in direct sunlight. Cotton rope hammocks are great for indoors, but will offer a shorter life if used outdoors.
Hammocks typically last anywhere from 2 to 10+ years, depending on the material and how well you maintain them. While synthetic fabrics can last for decades with proper care, factors like UV exposure, weather, and usage frequency heavily dictate your hammock's lifespan.
