After a couple of weeks examining this Lawson hammock, I was enjoying the animated movie Ratatouille when the critic Anton Ego reversed his opinion of Gusteau’s dining establishment. Perhaps I can relate to the situation he faced when defending something he’d previously dismissed. Explore it by Swinging Camping.

A Little History and Clarification About Lawson Hammock
A caveat and clearly defined definitions are the best additions at this moment. The phrase “spreader bar hammock” refers to the “new” backyard American-style hammock, constructed with heavy cotton rope, loosely woven spreader bars, and wood.
According to several sources, the captain of the riverboat, Joshua Ward, is credited with creating this rope hammock around 1890. In the 1890s, when Captain Ward started experimenting with standard hammocks, the design got to Western culture through Columbus, they had undergone numerous changes.
The robust, non-tippy, tight-weave, deep-sag hammock was virtually eliminated in favor of smaller hammocks made from fabrics with less stretch to accommodate more passengers on the vessel. For a long time, spreader bars have been in use on sailors’ hammocks from Pawleys Island to the Contrary.
However, they were more frequently used than the bridge-style hammocks we see today to create a barrel-shaped or oblong bed, not to smooth out your fabric. They may claim some credit for this. Spreader bars were utilized to make a trough or barrel shape.
It’s Not The Spreader Bar’s Fault! Lawson Hammock Setup Explained
To be clear, almost every hammock that is tight to the ground has an elevated center of gravity and may be unstable. Spreader bars are a major contributor to tipping, but aren’t the sole cause. In reality, conventional Nicaraguan hammocks are typically made with spreader bars at the ends and are not typically slippery.
Many have found that adding small spreader bars to the style of hammocks can artificially extend the hammock’s length, reduce discomfort from calf ridges, and make it easier to lie on a diagonal.
With or without spreader bars, this method is to pitch the hammock to a suitable sag. The sag varies with hammock size; however, by dropping the center point and moving it away from the tippy side, the problem is almost eliminated. The deep sag can also let the user sleep diagonally across the middle, making for an easier lay.
The Lawson Hammock is Different
It appears structurally similar, on the surface, to the modern Spreader Bar hammock. Yes, the Lawson Blue Ridge Camping Hammock does indeed have spreader bars; however, the similarities end there.
The spreader bars of the Lawson are small–they don’t stretch across the entire length of the hammock’s body. This is a crucial distinction as it affects how the fabric works in relation to bars. It also affects the cloth’s elasticity and lay.
The fabric at the end of the Lawson hammock is pleated and gathered to create an area that helps lower the hammock’s gravity center even further.
Additionally, it is worth noting that the Lawson Blue Ridge hammock isn’t afflicted by the tippyness found in modern rope hammocks. What sets the fabric within this Lawson apart from the bar? It’s the tent poles that open the bug net. Poles can be flexed, which means there’s some “play” in the lay of the hammock.
I removed it, rebuilt the Lawson off, reconstructed it several times, and experimented with different hang angles and options. What I discovered is that when the Lawson camping hammock is hung at the standard 20 to 30 degree angle from the suspended lines, it functions exactly like a Brazilian hammock in terms of overall layout, comfort, and stability.
When empty, the Lawson hammock can appear to hang with an untight pitch; however, the appearance is deceiving.

The Suspension System in the Lawson Hammock Blue Ridge
The hammock utilizes rope clews to join it to your anchor. Ropes are pushed over the spreader bars and then joined to the hammock with metal grommets. After a couple of hours working on the re-engineering of those Lawson’s hammock clews, I figured out the best way to connect them and put them back together.
My model didn’t have any metal hardware connected to the clews. The model was simply rope loops (some older models included metal rings). It was still serviceable, but it wasn’t my favorite place to attach. The loop can be removed and replaced with a climbing-rated ring or a lightweight aluminum descender ring that allows the user to use additional straps or another suspension system.
The Tarp: Lawson Hammock Tent Features
It is among only a handful of one-stop camping hammocks that include everything you need to build an outdoor shelter. It is also the cheapest. A tarp included with the package is a huge benefit for those looking for an easy setup, but do not want to use the traditional a la carte system.
The tarp is made to “wrap” around the Lawson hammock. The edges of the tarp attach to the body of the Lawson Blue Ridge hammock at the point where the tent poles are attached via small loops of shock cord. Hook-and-loop patching allows the tarp to grip the hammock.
Wrapping in the Lawson blue ridge hammock can be done to snag the corners. However, it is possible to guy out the corners and is recommended for a tighter pitch.
I discovered that the hook-and-loop attachment on the tarp was inefficient and fell off after I climbed into the hammock. Furthermore, the hook-and-loop attachment is difficult to fix after the bug net has been zipped shut once I’m inside.
The Bug Net on the Lawson Blue Ridge Hammock Tent
One of the things I truly appreciated about Lawson was the roomy interior, made achievable by those tent poles. For the price, you might think of fiberglass-based poles; however, the Lawson Blue Ridge Hammock Camping uses premium aluminum tent poles. It can be split into a variety of odd places (to me), creating several poles; they function perfectly.
A shock cord connects the poles, helps keep them in place, and makes the packing and assembly process simple.
The bug netting and Lawson hammock can be reached via one zippered door on the opposite side. It is essential to allow the “door “to hang out of the hammock before entering to avoid sitting on it or putting pressure on the seams. You can then pull the door up when you are in.
Comfort and Design of the Lawson Camping Hammock
The hammock’s exterior is coated with a waterproof material, allowing it to be set in the dirt. The Lawson Blue Ridge Hammock also features a bathtub-like “floor” with taped seams to protect against the weather. The end of the hammock has been folded and gathered, creating pockets, or a sort of which reduces your center of gravity.
Polyester is my favorite because it is less stretchy than nylon, providing greater firmness while retaining the benefits of an ergonomically designed lay.
Pros & Cons of the Lawson Hammock Review
I am very pleased with this hammock; however, I can see that it has both strengths and weaknesses compared to other companies that sell similar products.

Stay warm with a Lawson Blue Ridge Hammock Underquilt.
The tarp has small shock-cord loops that connect to the tent poles. This is also where I put my quilt.
Under quilts are great because they work well with the Lawson Blue Ridge hammock. With those four poles, it’s simple to connect an under quilt. And since the quilt is pulled away, there are no air gaps to fret about. To connect the under-quilts I made, I had to unwind the ends of the quilt so it lay flat. Then, I wrapped a shock cord through the pole connector points.
Sleeping pads can also be used with hammocks, such as the Lawson hammock. Since the fabric is down flatly, pads do not form a curl like they do when you gather the ends of hammocks.
Summary: Is the Lawson Blue Ridge Camping Hammock Worth It?
This Hammock is a low-cost, all-in-one camping hammock ideal for base camp and a few backpacking trips. Due to the weight added by the spreader bars and tent poles, this Lawson Blue Ridge Camping hammock isn’t the smallest choice; however, it’s comparable to single-occupant tent shelters.

FAQ About
Yes, it is perfectly okay to sleep in a hammock every night, provided you use an ergonomic design (like a gathered-end hammock, rather than one with spreader bars) and hang it with a gentle, loose curve to avoid the "banana" shape.
For lounging in the backyard or camping, a hammock is absolutely worth it. It provides superior ergonomic comfort, relieves joint pressure, and eliminates the need to find flat, root-free ground. However, it does require some setup practice and isn't ideal for treeless environments.
are widely considered the most comfortable. Made from soft, breathable, and woven materials, they conform to your body to eliminate pressure points and wrap you in a cozy "cocoon".
Hammocks can be good or bad for your back depending entirely on how they are used. When set up properly, they can relieve pressure and decompress the spine. However, if hung too tightly or slept in incorrectly, they can cause lower back pain and poor posture.
While you can leave some hammocks outside, it is highly discouraged for longevity. Continuous exposure to UV rays, rain, and humidity causes fabric to fade, weaken, and grow mildew. To leave one up permanently, you must protect it from the elements.
