Lay Flat Hammock Reviews: Comfort Test, Setup, Pros and Cons

()

I was really hoping to love this one! It’s one of the few real Lay Flat Hammock that exist. A hammock that stomach and side sleepers can benefit from. This appears like a marketing trick more than anything else. Are you not a fan of hammocks?

Maybe you’ll like this Flat Lay Hammock. Explore it by Swinging Camping.

Introduction to Lay Flat Hammocks

A while ago, I was kindly sent a Haven lay flat hammock to test. It was a great tent, and I was enthralled since I’ve never been a massive lover of hammocks, especially because I’m a side sleeper, and hammocks don’t work for side sleepers.

However, Flat Lay Hammock tents are distinct. They’re more like elevated tents than hammocks. So I wanted to test it out for myself and discover what it’s like. After some time spent exploring it, I’ve concluded that it’s an interesting concept, but in a real-world scenario, it’s not practical.

Let me explain.

Lay flat hammocks are a must, as their clever designs give you an easier (i.e., flat) sleeping experience, while relaxing you to rest above your forest’s floor. A second tester and I tried different options during our camping trips across the United States, from Michigan’s national forests to Texas state parks. Here are the top hammocks that lie flat for almost any kind of outdoor adventure.

Our Verdict on the Haven Lay Flat Hammock

Lay Flat Hammock

We’ve looked at a few lay-flat hammocks, such as those from Tentsile, The Una, or Connect, in the past year; however, this Haven Tent is an amazing model that blends the best qualities of the hammock and tent into a fantastic sleeping experience. It features a flat sleeping surface and an extremely comfortable hang.

The Deets: What Makes This Lay Flat Hammock Tent Different?

It’s important to understand that this isn’t your usual hammock. It’s definitely not a typical tent. It’s a super comfy mattress that carries the comforts of a mattress at home to the wonderful outdoors. It begins with a luxurious 4” thick ultra soft inflatable pad, available in either an ultralight or insulated version.

We tested the insulated model because it was freezing outside when we tried the pad. You could even put on a neoprene hood if you think the overnight lows are particularly harsh.

It is hung on two trees by two straps similar to an ordinary hammock. However, it’s a rectangle instead of…whatever shape that a hammock is…which can be a reason why it can provide the most lay-flat hang. The most flat hang of all these types of hammocks we’ve tried, actually.

You’ll notice that there are two bars for spacers located at each end of the hammock. These bars ensure that the whole thing is open and organized.

The entire package weighs less than 7lbs. The structure, once put together, measures 78” in length and 24 inches wide, which means it’s pretty spacious. It can also hold up to 265 pounds! It’s not a super compact item; however, when packed into a backpack, you shouldn’t mistake it for an ultralight backpacking choice.

Haven Tent Setup

A Lay Flat Hammock Camping is the same as a traditional hammock. Find two sturdy, healthy trees to hang on that have at least fifteen” wide. Then, wrap the straps around them to about the height of your head. Be aware that, unlike a traditional hammock, when you’re making the Haven, it is recommended to have the straps on the front of your head slightly higher, as your head weighs more over your feet.

Attach the edges of the hammock to the strap loops to ensure that the ridgeline is neat and shaped, then place the spreader bars into the little pockets. Inflate the sleep pad, then tuck it into the pockets in the corners to keep it in place. Voila! Flat-bottom hammock!

If you’d like or need a rain fly, you can use the tiny carabiners included with your Haven. The Haven has two slots at the end of the main stitching. The biners slide via the holes and then onto the straps. Also, ensure that the straps are tight.

Lay Flat Hammock

After you’ve set it up, there are a few ways to create a flat lay. In a standard hammock, it is laid across the width of your body to achieve the flattest lay possible. In the Haven Lay Flat Hammock, however, all you need to do is ensure that your butt-generally the middle of your body, is directly between the two.

If you move too much up or down, your feet or head will sag. If you don’t feel comfortable, move your body up and down until you feel as if you’re lying on your back.

If you’re using a Lay Flat Hammock Tent, you can stake it out or wrap it around using or without a bug net, to finish!

Voila! A Lay Flat Hammock is ready to give you a great night’s rest.

Choose a lay flat hammock that gives enough space for comfortable rest. Check the size, weight capacity, setup style, and included accessories like straps, rainfly, or bug net. A good lay flat hammock should be easy to carry, simple to install, and roomy enough for relaxing, camping, or outdoor sleeping.

Look for strong fabric, reinforced stitching, and heavy-duty straps. Polyester or nylon hammocks are better for outdoor use because they resist wear, moisture, and stretching. Also check the maximum weight limit to make sure the hammock can safely support users.

Before buying, review the warranty or return policy. A reliable warranty shows the seller stands behind the product. It also helps protect you if there are defects in stitching, straps, zippers, or fabric quality.

Think about where and how you will use the hammock. For camping, choose one with a rainfly and mosquito net. For backyard use, comfort and easy setup may matter more. For travel, pick a lightweight and compact design that is easy to pack.

Haven Tent Review: Is It Really Comfortable?

However, you’d want to see what we considered of the Haven Tent and how it fulfilled, do you?

READ Useful  Trek Light Gear Hammock Review: 7 Reasons You’ll Love It

From the beginning, I’ll affirm that the Haven lay flat hammock is just as comfortable and gives a fantastic night’s rest as it promises. In fact, I’ve never considered an inflatable hammock, since I’m not averse to sleeping in a traditional hammock. But, you know what? The 2 Person Lay-flat hammock tent Haven was extremely comfortable and allowed us to lie flat. I loved the extremely soft inflatable pad and was warm all night in cool temperatures.

I also loved the large pockets on both sides of this hammock. There are three pockets on each side! You can decide which direction you’d like to look in; however, they also provide ample storage for your phones, maps, books, headlamps, and whatever else you’ve forgotten to get out of your pocket at the end of the day…

Best Hammock Products the Smart Choice

The only thing we want to see improved is the brand’s sustainability initiatives. There’s not a lot at present; however, according to Haven, they’re working towards more sustainable production methods and materials, as well as creating ways to contribute to conservation initiatives.

Meanwhile, they’re focused on reuse and maintenance by letting customers bring in damaged tents on Haven’s expense for the brand to fix, then sell or donate them at a discount as recycled products. This is certainly a good start, and reducing waste is definitely essential.

In the near future, we’d be thrilled to have the flat lay hammock tent Haven constructed from recycled materials or solutions-dyed fabrics to create a greener, more sustainable product design.

Weight: The Biggest Problem With This Lay Flat Camping Hammock

Lay Flat Hammock

From the beginning, the main issue with the Lay Flat Hammock Haven Tent is its weight. It weighs more than 8 tons for a shelter that can only accommodate one person.

Now, an air mattress is also included, unlike most shelters. Even so, I’ve got four-person backpacking tents that do not weigh nearly that much. With or without the air mattress, it weighs 5 pounds. It is impossible to replace the mattress’s air cushion with another, since the design is based on this particular air mattress.

The only way I’d think about it is for an overnight, short excursion with a low number of miles. Anything more than this is too heavy to carry and impractical.

Size: How Spacious Is the Haven Lay Flat Hammock?

If you can get past the weight, it’s worth noting that the lay flat hammock Haven tent isn’t as big on the outside. I even received the extra-large size, which I wasn’t sure I needed at first. I don’t expect it to be any smaller than this. Imagine a tent just as big as your sleeping pad, and this is the definition of a Haven tent.

The larger size is 30 inches wide, which appears to be plenty of space, and there are some interesting options to consider, such as suspending your backpack or other equipment away from the ridgeline to keep it from getting in the way. I could manage it if this were a minimalist shelter.

There are sacrifices to gain weight and so on. But if I’m carrying this much weight, the shelter should provide more benefits rather than hanging above the ground.

Support: Does the Hammock Tent Lay Flat Enough?

Lay Flat Hammock

One thing that I believe contributes to the small-scale feeling is the way a mattress sags in the center when you lie on it. It’s not tough enough to keep your weight without folding slightly.

It’s not as comfortable as a traditional hammock, and it’s feasible to sleep on your back and even on your stomach if you like; however, it will feel uncomfortable. It will be more severe when you’re using larger sizes than the standard size, since your weight won’t be distributed as evenly.

Larger hikers will have less difficulty folding with the extra-large size, while smaller hikers will feel it less with the standard size. However, the more hammocks you put in, the less you’ll be able to feel.

Set Up Issues With Lay Flat Hammock Tents

Haven tents can be a bit tricky to make. It is necessary to place the head slightly higher than the feet, or when lying in it, your head will go downhill.

It is essential to ensure your hips are aligned, or else you’ll discover that your head is too low. When you’re moving into and out of it or trying to move about inside the lay flat hammock, it tends to shift to either side, and it’s a challenge to change positions without getting off the hammock.

These are all things I’d consider compromising if there were a substantial benefit to be derived. However, as far as I can tell, there is only the fact that you’re suspended above the ground. If I’m being honest, it feels somewhat silly.

The One Exception: When a Lay Flat Hammock Tent Makes Sense

There’s just one particular scenario in which I could consider this for a while: If I weren’t planning to go a long distance and was aware that I would not find an even surface at my campsite … this isn’t a realistic scenario. There’s a good chance of finding an unsteady camping spot off-trail.

If you’re off-trail, you’ll likely prefer to move fast and light. If you’re staying in the trail for a short and overnight stay, only a few miles from the trailhead, this is the location where you’re likely to find established and level campsites.

2 Person Lay Flat Hammock Tent Options

Many campers choose the 2-person open hammock for more space or to stay with a companion. A two-person hammock is more comfortable for Camping, but it also adds weight and requires setup.

A larger hammock tent requires stronger anchor points, more space between the trees, and better balance. It could also take a bit longer to set up correctly.

If you’re thinking of a 2-person lay flat hammock, take a look at the way you intend to use it. If you are planning to camp in your car or for short trips, the additional space may make sense. If you are backpacking, the extra weight could be too much to bear.

READ Useful  Magellan Hammock Review: Is it Worth Buying?

Night Cat Lay Flat Hammock.

This kind of hammock tent is used by campers seeking an affordable or basic suspended shelter. If you compare it to the Haven, look at its weight, size, setup, sleeping width, comfort, and rain protection.

A less expensive flat lay hammock could be suitable for casual use; durability and comfort should be considered. If you are camping overnight, the shelter should be solid, weatherproof, and comfortable enough to accommodate your preferred sleeping habits.

Best Lay Flat Hammock Tent: What to Look For

When choosing the most comfortable lay-flat hammock tent, prioritize comfort first. The primary reason to purchase one is to rest more comfortably than in a normal hammock.

Then check the weight. Lay flat hammocks may not be suitable for long hikes. If you’re hiking a long distance, each pound counts.

Take a look at the sleep pad. Many lay-flat designs rely on an individual pad to form a structure. If the pad feels uncomfortable or difficult to replace, it may be a problem.

Weather protection is also important. A great lay-flat camper’s hammock setup should include bug nets, a rain fly, sturdy straps, and secure anchor points.

Then, think about the setup. A cozy tent that’s hard to pitch can cause frustration after a long, hard day out.

Bottom Line: Is a Lay Flat Hammock Worth It?

Who are you using the Haven for? It’s for anyone uncomfortable sleeping on the ground in a tent but still prefers an easy lay-flat experience and wants more flexibility and space than traditional hammocks offer. People looking for a comfortable, cozy sleeping space will appreciate the Haven; however, backpackers might find it a bit heavy for a single-person setup, weighing nearly 7 pounds with the pad.

It’s definitely bulky. If you’re experiencing poor balance, you might consider a different sleeping arrangement. However, for the rest of us, it’s a comfortable and cozy hammock to lie on to enjoy the outdoors. It is similar to lying on your mattress at home. That’s always a great thing.

Overall, The Haven is a comfortable and innovative Lay Flat Hammock Tent that feels more like sleeping on an incredibly small bed than a traditional hammock. It’s not perfect and is not suitable for every camping excursion. If you’re a good camper, it can help make Camping more relaxed.

FAQ About

To lay flat in a traditional gathered-end hammock, you need to lie on a diagonal angle rather than straight down the center. This technique uses the fabric’s width to counter the "banana" shape, allowing your head, torso, and feet to sit horizontally level.

Sleeping in a hammock can also promote better blood circulation. With your body slightly elevated and your legs elevated, gravity helps blood flow more easily throughout your body, reducing the risk of oedema and improving overall circulation. Better circulation can contribute to healthier muscles and joints.

When WWII ended in the late summer of 1945, there were 3 million enlisted men in the Navy--equating to millions of hammocks and mattresses. Since modern Navy ships were now equipped with bunks, a decision was made to stop issuing hammocks to recruits.
